Applying to the JD Program

FIRST-YEAR APPLICANTS

Application requirements for those seeking admission as first-year students are as follows:

  1. Complete the application form. You can either fill out the application online (starting Oct. 1, 2009), or download and print out the application form, complete it, sign it, and return it by postal mail. The deadline for application is March 15, 2010. To receive priority consideration for scholarships, your application must be complete by  Jan. 15, 2010.
  2. Include with your application a brief personal statement. You can use this statement to convey to the Admissions Committee any experiences, interests, unusual circumstances, or other information you believe may help the Committee evaluate your potential for success at the Law School. Because we do not conduct individual interviews, your personal statement is the best way for you to tell us what you would most like us to know about you.
  3. Submit a non-refundable application fee of $50. Payment is made through the LSAC credit card fee collection service if applying online. Checks or money orders should be made payable to Wayne State University. Checks drawn on banks outside of the United States should carry the notation "Payable in U.S. Funds." Cash and credit cards are not accepted.
  4. Have the LSAC submit a copy of your LSDAS Report (which includes copies of transcripts from all United States undergraduate schools) to the law school. If you earned your bachelor’s (or equivalent) degree from a college or university located outside the United States, its territories, or Canada, you must have the LSAC submit a JD-CAS Report instead.
  5. Arrange for the submission of two letters of recommendation. The letters should be from individuals, such as college professors or others, who can comment on your intellectual abilities and academic performance. If you have been out of school for a number of years you may submit letters of recommendation from an employer.  Letters of recommendation should be sent directly to LSAC.

TRANSFER APPLICANTS

To be eligible for admission as a transfer student, you must have successfully completed all of the first-year day or evening courses required by your ABA-accredited law school. Transfer applicants must have superior law school academic credentials to be offered admission. Transfer students are admitted to the fall term only. The application deadline for transfer applicants is July 1, 2009. To apply, you must complete all of the requirements for first-year applicants, as set forth above, and provide in addition:

  1. An official transcript including all of your grades sent directly from your law school.
  2. A letter of good standing from your law school.

GUEST STUDENT APPLICANTS

If you wish to enroll at Wayne Law for one or two terms and intend to transfer credits earned back to your home law school, you must apply as a guest student. To attend as a guest student during the fall or winter terms, follow the procedures set forth above for transfer applicants. In addition, the letter of good standing must include a statement granting permission for you to attend Wayne Law for the semester(s) in question, agreeing to accept the credits earned, and stating any other requirements or limitations. You must also include an official transcript from your degree-granting undergraduate school.

If you want to attend as a guest student during the summer term, the application procedure is simpler – just download, print, complete, and mail in the summer guest admission form. Be sure to include your law school’s approval on the admission form.
