  • F. Thomas Lewand, '70, was named a Power Lawyer by Crain's Detroit Business. Lewand is a partner with Bodman LLP in Detroit and has played a significant role in the 31-year federal court battling over control and operation of the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department.

  • Don M. Schmidt, '70, a principal in Miller Canfield's Kalamazoo office, received the 2009 Distinguished Municipal Attorney Award given by the Michigan Municipal League and the Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys.

  • Hon. William Murphy, '70, was appointed as chief judge of the Michigan Court of Appeals, effective for a term to expire Dec. 31, 2011. Murphy was among three candidates for the post. He was approved on a 4-3 vote. Murphy was appointed to the court in 1988. Previously, he was a member of the East Grand Rapids City Commission, a law clerk for the Michigan Court of Appeals, and he worked as an attorney in private practice.

  • Jay Bielfield, '70, has joined Roetzel and Andress LPA as counsel in Roetzel's Toledo office. Bielfield's practice includes banking, finance, government and professional sports. He specializes in negotiations, client development and real estate, and is a licensed broker. Bielfield previously negotiated and managed the acquisition of both a major league baseball team and a national ice hockey team. He negotiated the construction and financing of a major league baseball stadium, and formerly served on the National Hockey League's Board of Governors. Bielfield has served as general counsel to a number of high-profile clients, including two professional sports organizations. He is a member of the State Bar of Michigan.

  • Martin ReisigMartin Reisig, '70, was honored with the Annual Wade Hampton McCree, Jr. Memorial Award earlier this month. The award is given by the Federal Bar Association for the Eastern District of Michigan to individuals who have made a major difference and contribution to the justice system.

  • Boyd E. Chapin, '69, has been appointed general counsel for the Michigan Podiatric Medical Association. A shareholder in the Law Firm of Garan Lucow Miller, Chapin concentrates his practice in the areas of chiropractic, podiatric, dental, and all phases of medical malpractice defense, nursing home liability, and hospital liability defense.

  • David W. Potts, '69, a Butzel Long attorney and shareholder, has been re-elected to the Oakland County Board of Commissioners. Potts was first elected on Aug. 8, 2006. He represents the cities of Birmingham and Bloomfield Hills, part of Bloomfield Township (approximately 40 percent) and a small portion of the City of Troy, the 20th Commission District.

  • Tyrone FahnerTyrone Fahner, '68, was named chairman of the Shedd Aquarium's Board of Trustees in Chicago. He is a partner and former chairman at Mayer Brown LLP and president of the Civic Committee of The Commercial Club of Chicago. His daughter, Maggie, a member of the marine mammal team at the aquarium, sparked his interest, and he was elected to the institution's Board of Trustees in 2004. He also serves on Wayne Law's Board of Visitors and as a member of the U.S. Commission for the Preservation of America's Heritage Abroad. He is a former attorney general of Illinois, former director of the Illinois Department of Law Enforcement and former assistant U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Illinois.

  • Wayne BuddWayne Budd, '67, was hired by Roxbury Community College in Massachusetts to investigate allegations of mismanagement at the college and make recommendations on improving the school's financial oversight procedures. He is a litigator with Goodwin Proctor and a former associate attorney general of the United States as well as a former U.S. attorney for Massachusetts. Budd offered his services to the college on a pro bono basis.

  • Wayne BuddWayne Budd, '67, is being awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree by Boston College during its May commencement. The legal career of Budd, a graduate of Boston College, has run the gamut from corporate counsel to associate U.S. attorney general, from business executive to Massachusetts' chief federal prosecutor. Along the way, Budd has served as a mentor, advocate and advisor in support of education, civil rights, and the development of the next generation of business and civic leaders. Currently senior counsel at the Boston law firm of Goodwin Procter, LLP, Budd has lent his expertise to federal and state agencies on sentencing guidelines, civil service regulation and public health. He is a board member for the New England Innocence Project and the pre-collegiate program Squash Busters Inc., and a former chairman and board member of The Partnership, a leadership development initiative for African-American men.
