Robert A. BerlowRobert A. Berlow, ’71, has joined the law firm of Taubman Nadis & Neuman, P.C. as of counsel to the firm. Berlow concentrates his practice in the areas of business and commercial real estate law with a particular focus on commercial real estate development and leasing. Berlow is a former partner of Dykema Gossett where he practiced for nine years.  At Dykema, he served as chairperson of the firm’s Retail Practice Group. Prior to that, Berlow was executive vice president, chief administrative officer and general counsel of Perry Drug Stores, Inc., a publicly traded retail drug store chain which was later acquired by Rite Aid. In 2008, Berlow earned a listing in The Best Lawyers in America and, for more than 15 years, has been listed in Who’s Who in American Law and Who’s Who in America.

BurwellLinda Burwell, ’85, a partner with Detroit-based employment law firm Nemeth Burwell, P.C., led a national webinar entitled, Employee Handbooks: Spotting Mistakes and Omissions Your Employees Can Use Against You, on March 12, 2008.The webinar was hosted by a national publisher of newsletters, booklets, and manuals targeted to top management, human resource directors, personnel managers, front-line managers, and supervisors at small-to-medium sized firms. Webinar participants included human resource executives and those with HR responsibilities and hailed from throughout the United States.

Christopher Bernard, ’00, was recently promoted to partner at the Bodman LLP law firm in Ann Arbor. Bernard represents businesses and municipal governments in complex commercial litigation and routinely advises clients regarding contract and statutory issues. C. Leslie BanasLeslie Banas, '76, contributed to the newly released edition of Michigan Business Laws Annotated, 2007-2008 published by Thomson West. Banas, a partner in Honigman’s Real Estate Practice, has written the commentaries to the chapters covering entities formed under various partnership and limited liability statutes. She has significant experience assisting clients in the formation and capitalization of partnerships and LLCs, in the negotiation of joint venture arrangements, and in the formation of real estate investment funds.  Banas also has been selected as one of Michigan 's Super Lawyers and Best Lawyers in America and is afrequent speaker on real estate development and limited liability company topics.  She was recently named chair-elect of the State Bar of Michigan’s Real Property Law Section.

Kevin BreckKevin H. Breck, ’89,has joined Winston & Cashatt Lawyers. He will focus on commercial litigation, contract law, land use, and business litigation. Breck was a former equity partner in the Detroit firm of Clark Hill PLC where he spent 17 years counseling clients and litigants in complex commercial litigation, zoning and land use, lender liability, and condemnation issues. He is admitted to practice law in Washington and Michigan.

Burwell, ’85, a partner at Detroit-based employment law firm Nemeth Burwell, P.C., spoke in New York City this month at a large conference of corporate in-house counsel attorneys on the topic of e-discovery and identity theft in the workplace. Burwell continues to be sought after for her expertise in this emerging sector of the law. She also co-authored an article on identity theft in the workplace, along with Nemeth Burwell attorney Terry Bonnette, which appears in the November issue of the respected legal trade publication, In-House Counsel

Robert A. Berlow, ’71, a member of Kickham Hanley P.C., has been named in the 25th anniversary edition (2008) of “The Best Lawyers in America.” A resident of West Bloomfield, Mr. Berlow, prior to joining the firm, was Executive Vice President, Chief Administrative Officer and General Counsel of Perry Drug Stores, Inc. Henry J. Brennan, III of Howard & Howard Attorneys, P.C. has been named to "Michigan Super Lawyers 2007" by a survey of Law & Politics. He was selected through a process which included peer evaluation and independent research. Only 5 percent of the attorneys in Michigan were named to the list. Brennan received his J.D. from Wayne State University Law School in 1983.

The law firm of Foster, Swift, Collins, & Smith P.C. is pleased to announce that Dirk Beckwith and Brian Renaud have been nominated as Fellows of the Michigan State Bar Foundation.  Beckwith focuses his practice in the areas of Construction Law, Transportation Law, and Commercial Litigation.  An undergraduate of the University of Michigan, he earned his law degree from Wayne State University School of Law in 1983. Beckwith has experience representing clients with issues involving product liability, as well as representing secured and unsecured creditors in U.S. Bankruptcy Court.  He is a shareholder in the firm’s Farmington Hills office and a member of the firm’s Commercial Litigation practice group.

Lisa M. Berden, an associate in the Detroit office of Miller Canfield, was recently appointed to the board of directors of 555 Gallery/Studio in Detroit, a charitable organization.  The core mission of 555 Gallery/Studio is to further enrich and diversify cultural life in the greater metro Detroit area.  In support of this mission, 555 engage in community outreach and youth art programs.  It also facilitates the development of emerging artists by offering 555 exhibition/installation space, leading and collaborating in the development of programs for the visual and performing arts, and providing workspace for practicing artists.  At Miller Canfield, Berden practices federal tax law, including work with nonprofit and charitable organizations.  She is a member of the American Bar Association, State Bar of Michigan, Women Lawyers of Michigan, and the Urban Land Institute’s Young Leaders Group.  She earned her law degree from Wayne State University Law School.  She earned her B.A. from Michigan State University, where she majored in English and Political Science.  She also received a provisional teaching certificate from Central Michigan University and taught high school before becoming an attorney.

Detroit-based business law firm Honigman, Miller, Schwartz, and Cohn L.L.P. (Honigman) announced recently that C. Leslie Banas, partner in the Real Estate Department, has been elected chair-elect of the State Bar of Michigan’s Real Property Law Section for its 2007-2008 term.  The Real Property Law Section provides education and information about current real property issues through their Web site, meetings, seminars, pro bono service programs and a quarterly journal publication.  Banas earned her law degree from Wayne State University Law School and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from the University of Detroit.  She has experience in a wide variety of sophisticated commercial transactions for clients, including real estate developers, apartment owners, commercial lenders and health care providers.  Additionally, Lawrence D. McLaughlin was recognized as a “Star Practitioner” in Chambers USA, America’s Leading Lawyers for Business 2007.  McLaughlin is a Honigman board member and partner and chair of the Real Estate Department.  He graduated from Wayne State University Law School.

Katie M. Blakley, a 2007 Wayne State University Law School alumna, has joined Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione’s Ann Arbor office. Ms. Blakley, who will serve as an associate, worked at Brinks as a law clerk before receiving her law degree. She earned a J.D. from Wayne State University Law School and a B.S. in engineering mechanics from Michigan State University. She will focus her practice on patent prosecution.
