Wayne State University Law School
Internship Programs

As of July 09, 2005
This page will be updated periodically; please check with Prof. David Moss, david.moss@wayne.edu, for the most recent list.

Requirements. Internships are available for ungraded course credits for J.D. students in good academic standing who have satisfactorily completed the first year, including legal writing. LLM students with a 3.0 grade point (or Directors’ permission) and the equivalent of the first year may also enroll in internships related to their concentration.

Field work. For the 14-week fall or winter term, students may earn 2 credits for at least 8 hours per week of supervised field work (112 hours total) or 3 credits for at least 12 hours per week of supervised field work (168 hours total). For the 7-week spring/summer term, students may earn 1 credit for at least 8 hours per week of supervised field work (52 hours total), 2 credits for at least 16 hours per week (112 hours total), or 3 credits for at least 24 hours per week (168 hours total).

Internship class. In addition to the field work component, interns attend an internship class. The class meets regularly throughout the semester, but not necessarily every week. Class attendance is required. Check the registration packet for dates and times of the class. If you know in advance that you cannot attend each class for a particular internship, then you should not register for that internship during the current semester.

Detailed logs. Interns keep a daily, detailed log of the work they perform at the site, which the field placement supervisor signs weekly, and the student turns in regularly.

Journals and evaluations. Students complete an internship evaluation and other class assignments (such as journals) and have their field supervisor submit an evaluation of their work.

Placement selection. Students arrange their own internships. A description of our current placements follows.

Registration and Director’s consent. No student may register for an internship without the approval of the Director or Assistant Director of Clinical Education. See "How to Register for an Internship" below.

Internship credit limits. The faculty has imposed a 6-credit limit on the total number of internship credits a student may earn, and these 6 credits count toward the 14 credit "applied skills" course credit limit.

Please see the Faculty’s Internship Standards for more details. For more information, contact:
