Law School 's Calkins Honored for Teaching Excellence

Stephen Calkins, a professor of law and the director of Graduate Studies at the Wayne State University Law School , has been honored by the School with the Donald H. Gordon Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Prof. CalkinsCalkins, formerly General Counsel with the Federal Trade Commission, teaches courses and seminars in antitrust, consumer law, and torts.  As a teacher, Calkins is known for blending rigorous Socratic dialogue with ample doses of humor.

A prolific author, Professor Calkins has published dozens of articles in academic and specialty journals.  He is a co-author (with Gellhorn and Kovacic) of the 5 th edition of the popular Antitrust Law and Economics in a Nutshell (2004).

Professor Calkins lectures around the world on issues of antitrust and trade regulation, and enjoys a reputation as a singularly popular speaker.  His annual luncheon address is a highlight of the huge Spring Meeting of the American Bar Association Section of Antitrust Law.  This fall he will participate as one of four master teachers in an intensive antitrust course in Florida .

Professor Calkins received his undergraduate degree from Yale University and his J.D. from Harvard Law School .  He is a member of the American Law Institute and is serving his third three-year term on the Council of the ABA Antitrust Section.  He has taught law at the University of Michigan , the University of Pennsylvania , and in The Netherlands at the University of Utrecht .

The Gordon Award and an accompanying honorarium were given to Professor Calkins at the State Bar of Michigan Annual Meeting on September 14, 2006.

The Gordon Teaching Award was established by friends of Donald H. Gordon who served as dean of the WSU Law School from 1975 to 1980.  The award has been given each year since 1981.
