WSU Law School Increases Scholarship Aid

Wayne State University Law School Dean Frank H. Wu announced a major increase in the Law School’s scholarships, grants, and other forms of financial assistance June 22, following the announcement of the rise in tuition that was voted on by the WSU Board of Governors.

An additional $754,700 will be directed to student aid. This significantly augments the Law School’s aid programs, which were at an already impressive $2.6 million per year. 89% of students who attend the Law School receive some form of financial assistance.

“I want to reassure both our new and returning students,” Dean Wu said, “that the Law School is aware of the intensified financial pressure the rise in tuition will place on them, and to tell them we have developed a program to help alleviate the burden.”

The tuition and fees for a first-year, full-time, in-state student (30 credits) at the Law School will be $17,557.40 for the 2005-06 academic year. The tuition increase will fund services that will directly benefit students, including the hiring of additional faculty and the upgrading of technology and support programs.

Echoing WSU Provost Dr. Nancy S. Barrett, Dean Wu noted that there has not been a major tuition increase at the Law School for many years, and that years of reduced state support made the increase necessary. The Dean noted that the increase still makes the WSU Law School the most affordable in the state of Michigan.
